3G next step in evolution of mobile technology

Indian operators are initiating to offer 3G services to help
in optimizing the voice networks and creating additional opportunities for data
services.

Speaking at the CEO Conclave at New Delhi, P Balaji,
vice-president marketing and strategy, Ericssion said that the term mobile has
altogether changed from only receiving calls to a basic device for all business
operations. He said that mobility is driving telecom revolution globally and
India is poised for an explosive growth in wireless consumption.

Stating the feasibility of entry fee on 3G services, Director
General, Cellular Operators Association of India TV Ramachandran said that it
would result in its failure. "Europe had adopted a similar system,
including an auction for spectrum which has resulted in telecom operators
investing a lot of money for getting the spectrum, leading to the delay in the
launch of the services and finally making it expensive for users," he said.
The Government of India is also initiating to take a decision on 3G spectrum by
the first quarter of 2006.

The panel of experts also highlighted that following the success of GSM in
the country the benefits of 3G services are being mulled over. The 3G spectrum,
whose voice capacity is four to five times higher than that of the existing 2G
spectrum, is seen as a solution to ease the spectrum limitations in metros and
other cities. The 3G services are also considered to be useful in achieving the
broadband objectives in rural areas besides taking up social initiatives.
