Cisco launches Carrier Routing System for telecom SPs

Cisco has introduced Carrier Routing System (CRS-1) to cater to the telecom service providers and research organizations in the country. The product is priced at $450,000 and is expected to hit the market by the month of July. This routing platform is capable of delivering up to 92 terabits per second of throughput and will future proof service provider networks well in the future. The Cisco CRS-1 has been developed with a team of 500 engineers over the last four years with an investment of $ 500 million. 

“We will be targeting the handful of telecom providers in the country initially as this product is designed to deliver continuous system operation, service flexibility and extended system longevity. It will offer the SPs to scale network capacity to new levels and deliver next-generation data, voice and video services over a converged Internet Protocol network while protecting their investments in the system,” says Rangnath Salgame, President (India and
SAARC).

The CRS-1 is today the fastest routing platform in the world and it enables reliable, large-scale delivery of high-bandwidth applications, including video-on-demand, online gaming and real time interactive service. 

Globally the routing market is estimated at $2 billion and Cisco had 80 per cent market share in the first quarter of 2004. In India, the routing market is $26.7 million and the company had 90 per cent market share in the last quarter of 2003. This initiative of Cisco is a further move to enhance its reach across the globe.
