Dayanidhi Maran to take over as Communication & IT minister

Dayanidhi Maran, the 37-year old son of veteran politician and ex-Union Commerce Minister, late Murasoli Maran, will be taking over as the Minister of Communications and IT of India.

One of the first timers to enter the country´s 14th Lok Sabha, Dayanidhi defeated AIADMK´s Balaganga by over 1,20,000 votes in Central Chennai. Before entering politics, he was the director of the Sun Network and was managing Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK)-backed and Sun TV-promoted multi-system operator (MSO), Sumangali Cable Vision (SCV) in Chennai. Under his leadership, SCV was the first MSO in the country to embrace the much-discussed conditional access system (CAS) in Chennai. SCV has almost wiped out other cable TV operators, both MSOs and independents, and is reportedly offering 104 digital channels as of now. 

For the Maran Jr, his evolution from a businessman to a politician was almost expected when he was spotted at various important political meetings along with DMK chief, M Karunanidhi. Following the demise of his father, Dayanidhi was groomed to occupy his space. What has surprised many is his sudden elevation as cabinet minister. However, given his background­-a management student from Harvard Business School and graduation in economics from the Loyola College-­Dayanidhi´s taking over as the Minister of Communications and IT from Arun Shourie is expected to reflect positively for the market.
