Megabyte introduced its own PC named MyMega PC, while its focus on
services and support continued

Advertisment

From a total turnover of about Rs 100 crore in the FY 2005-06,
Bangalore-based Megabyte Corporation has managed to add on another Rs 20 crore
to touch a total turnover of Rs 119.75 crore in the last fiscal. Having
introduced its own assembled brand of PCs named 'MyMega PC', the company focused
its efforts on marketing and promotion of this new brand, while also working for
other vendor brands.

Clocking a 17 percent growth in the last fiscal, the company also increased
its manpower from 40 to 52 people. Service support has been a key feature that
helped the company to strengthen its existing customer base as well as add on
new ones.

Additionally, Megabyte has also managed to grow its retail unit in Bangalore
as well as a branch in Ahmedabad. Already a premier partner for Intel, Megabyte
was chosen as the sub-distributor for Seagate products in Karnataka, an
authorized Sony dealer, and partner for Samsung, Mercury and HP in the state.

The company increased its focus on service, support, and clocked revenue of
Rs 25 lakh from services alone, last year. The key strengths of Megabyte
continued to be in its dealership, with 55 percent of its revenues coming out of
that business.

Like 2005-06, this year also the focus verticals for the company business
continued to be the home, SOHO and education. This year, the retailing business
contributed 15 percent of the total revenue for Megabyte. Government and IT

22.EASTERN IT GROUP :Loyalty Pays

Sticking to D-Link, despite stiff competition from other networking
vendors, helped Eastern IT Group maintain a steady growth

With a turnover of Rs 104 crore, Kolkata-based Eastern IT Group registered a
modest growth, but hopes to improve this by clocking a 25 percent growth this
year. Most of its revenues, estimated at around 40 percent, came from D-Link,
for which the company is the distributor in the eastern region.

Besides D-Link, the other major vendor for the company is Cisco. Lead by JK
Baid, the Eastern IT Group comprises three business groups-Eastern Comnet,
Eastern Logica and Epitom Networks. Eastern Comnet, the flagship company got
into the distribution business over a decade ago and today is the one of the
biggest distributor for networking products in the East. Eastern Logica is more
inclined towards the retail business, while Epitom Networks is involved in
network integration. This again underlines the company focus on networking as a
business vertical.

Advertisment

Eastern IT offers the full range of networking products like switches, hubs,
routers, lease line modems, wireless bridges, VoIP gateways, IP camera, digital
home products, copper and fiber cabling range along with various other products
as a regional distributor.

One of the highlights of the last year for Eastern IT Group was its
partnership with Cyberoam in July as a regional distributor. It is hoping that
this relationship will reap a great reward as it complements its focus on
networking.

The company has got most of the leading networking vendors on its portfolio,
including Avaya. It also deals in several other brands like Valrack, HP,
Samsung, Intel etc. It was also keen on tying up with mobile accessories brands
like Jabra at one point of time though the interest seems to have died.

24.Venktron Digital Systems :Magical Mark Met

Venktron managed to touch the magical mark of Rs 100 crore last fiscal
earning itself a place in the DQ Channels Silver Club for the second year
running

Venktron Digital Systems is an organization that has actively been involved
in the computer business, since it began its operation in 1990.

Venktron started off as a small reseller of Seagate hard drives and other
computer peripherals. Over the years the company gained momentum in its growth
by carrying out operations in various fields such as import, trading, high tech
sales and marketing.

Today the scenario has significantly changed. Venktron is a distributor of
almost all known brands of storage devices like Seagate, Western Digital,
Samsung, Sony, etc. Venktron is the largest importer of Seagate hard disk drives
in India. It also bagged the Best Import Partner award from Seagate. Western
Digital has appointed it as a sole distributor for external hard drives. It is
also a VIP partner of Maxtor.

The company even manufactures computers under its brand name Venktron, though
that is a very small component of its overall business. Venktron has its own
computer-assembling unit in Mumbai and sells these systems with the
configuration required by its customers.

Its turnover for FY 2006-07 touched the three-digit mark of Rs 100 crore,
registering a growth of 19 percent from the earlier year's turnover of Rs 81
crore.

Venktron also undertakes annual maintenance contracts. The company primarily
imports computer parts, peripherals, modules, etc from USA, Taiwan, Singapore,
Hong Kong and other countries. It offers up to three years warranty on all its
products, a strategy that has helped it retain most of its customers till date.

25.Sogo Computers :Restructuring Time

This distributor from the South integrated its retail, reselling and
leasing business last year into one entity while focusing on new tie-ups with
Samsung and LG

Clocking a turnover of close to Rs 100 crore for 2006-07, Sogo Computers did
not have much to rejoice during the year. Reason being a downslide of 33 percent
in its revenue over the previous fiscal.

One reason for this average growth was the company's decision to restructure
and integrate its three businesses-resale (computers and peripherals), retail
(IT and CE) and rentals including leasing and hire purchase.

As part of this strategy, the company also integrated its Iceware chain of
outlets while closing down non-performing units in Bangalore. It appointed
George Mathew as new management head for the retail arm.

While continuing its focus on retail in IT and CE, Sogo also forged new
tie-ups with Samsung and LG last year. Government, education, IT and ITeS
continued to be the growth verticals, while home, SMB and BFSI contributed
significantly to the revenues of the company. Reselling and system integration
added the much-needed fillip to the otherwise dismally performing retail
business during 2006-07.

Working with about 110 employees, Sogo saw a 200 percent increase in its
upcountry branches' turnover despite its overall negative growth. Having
integrated their business and streamlined it, the company now is banking on its
upcountry strengths, and plans to increase business by two fold in the next
fiscal. Since the branch offices did so well in the last fiscal, Sogo is
concentrating on furthering their business at the branch offices, which would
add to the company's overall growth next year.
