Though the Ingram Micro-Tech Pacific merger took place over a year and
half ago, it has still not got the official stamp from the governmental
agencies. But this has in no way stopped the company from growing`
Ingram Micro has once more monopolized the top slot at the DQ Channels Silver
Club at the numero uno slot. Though it continued its stint at the top, its
growth rate wasn't too good, considering it was a forerunner, and it did not
fare as well when compared to other companies in the Silver Club.
Ingram Micro posted a total turnover of Rs 6,896 crore in 2006-07, of which
12 percent is estimated to have come from its mobility business and therefore
was discounted from the agency revenues considered in this listing. This brought
its agency revenues to rest Rs 6,068 crore.
The merger between Ingram and Tech PacifOnce Again ic, which took place over
two years ago, has still not got the legal nod from the Bangalore court. A case
filed by Samsung claiming that the merger affected the business interests is
also pending in the court. Nonetheless, the company is currently doing business
with Samsung and is operating under the aegis of Ingram Micro.
It is interesting to note that the distribution powerhouse managed to
continue adding brands, which helped it further in value business, rather than
focusing merely on the volume end. This explains its tie-up with companies like
Symbol, Wyse, Adaptec, RedHat, Hitachi Data Systems and Snap Server. Ingram is
seeing good uptake from its storage business and has increasingly started
seeking vendors that have high-end enterprise level products, which are not sold
on the push strategy. The components busiÂness subsequently saw sluggish growth
due to this change in focus.

Redington (India):Crossing A Landmark
New tie-ups helped Redington to cross the Rs 5,000 crore milestone,
with a growth of 19 percent in 2006-07. Its IPO, to raise Rs 150 crore, was
oversubscribed 43 times
Redington has had a good year, posting a turnover of Rs 5,022 crore in
2006-07. This was a 19 percent growth over the previous year's turnover of Rs
4068 crore.
One major reason for this growth was its tie-up with big vendors like Sun
Microsystems. Other vendor alliances entered into last year include Telelogic
for its lifecycle management software, Sonicwall for its security appliances,
Cyberoam for its unified threat management solution and Apple India for its
complete product range.
Of these, Redington has pegged high hopes on Apple products, especially in the
consumer electronics space.
But the highlight of the year for Redington was its IPO in Jan 2007, to raise
Rs 150 crore. The issue was oversubscribed 43 times. This makes it the second
largest IPO in the channel space in the last two years, after Tulip Services.
Besides this, the company also bagged some big government projects. These
include one from the Tamil Nadu ELCOT Project for supply to government schools
and departments and a project for the Punjab Schools' computerization order.
It undertook a VAT implementation project for the Bihar State Electronics
Development Corporation at Patna and also worked with the Indian Overseas Bank
to provide data-auditing solutions.
36 percent of Redington's business came from the sales of peripherals,
supplies and consumer PCs, while systems sales constituted for 22 percent.
Networking and enterprise solutions brought in 10 and seven percent
respectively, while the component business accounted for 17 percent.

Esys Technologies:Busybody Distribution House
Last December, Teledata Informatics pumped in $105 million into eSys

Seagate as its vendor and its Regional Director, R Govindan
Singapore-headquartered IT distribution house and PC manufacturer eSys
Technologies signed an agreement with Teledata Informatics for a strategic
investment of up to $105 million in eSys. The investment will help eSys continue
and consolidate its growth, which has seen it growing from first year revenues
of S$187 million to revenues of S$3 billion in 2005. This injection of capital
from Teledata is bound to help eSys further its business by aiding acquisitions.
While eSys gained the moolah, the year was also marked by some big losses.
Seagate terminated the distribution agreements with eSys, amidst allegations of
irregularities in compliance to the agreement. Seagate requested an intrusive
audit of eSys' documents, which the latter denied and instead alleged that
Seagate had often refused shipment as per the agreement.
The next loss was the exit of R Govindan, Regional Director-South Asia, eight
months after he moved to Singapore. Meanwhile, the company announced an
investment of Rs 1,000 crore in India, including a Rs 250 crore PC manufacturing
plant at Nalagarh in Himachal Pradesh and a Rs 100 crore investment for a global
backoffice in Chandigarh technology park.
Besides, the company was kept busy with several tie-ups during the year.
Turbolinux, the Japan-based linux solutions provider, signed up with eSys to
leverage on its presence in B and C-category cities, where Turbolinux has no
presence. Through this tie-up, eSys acquired a product portfolio that includes
Turbolinux's desktop operating system, server operating systems, applications
etc.

It has been an eventful year for SES with the opening of several branches,
coupled with new partnerships
In 2006-07 SES Technologies achieved a turnover of Rs 662 crore, gaining a 30
percent
growth rate from the earlier year's figure of Rs 462 crore. The year also saw
SES add 20 new branch offices to its existing network. This move helped it reach
out to smaller cities and partners.
There was also an increase in its workforce from 205 to 380. Most of the
company's staff is engaged in its sales and marketing division with 200 people,
while 117 people are engaged in the HR and administrative activities. This
fiscal the company plans to take its total manpower strength to 595, of which
148 new people will be recruited for sales and marketing and 27 will join the
existing team of product/project implementation and quality control division.
It was an eventful year for more than one reason for SES, with the
announcement of Kurien Chandy as its new CEO. Chandy took over from former CEO
PK Krishnaprasad, who resigned last fiscal. Recently, SES Technologies appointed
Kamran Gani, as its new MD. SES also won recognition in the form of awards.
Among the major ones were those that SES bagged from Microsoft and Intel.
The year 2006-07 also saw SES tying up with new vendors. It bagged the

Iris Computers:Upcountry All The Way
Aggressively expanding in the B and C-class cities held this national
level distributor in good stead. Coupled with its strategy to increase its
product line, Iris managed to get a good mindshare among the channel
Touching a turnover of Rs 572 crore, Iris Computers continued its presence in
the Silver Club for the last eight years. What helped it in this endeavor is the
expansion of its product line, increasing the number of its branches and
widening its channel base.
The major tools that helped Iris achieve this milestone were its
aggressiveness to expand across the country and provide maximum support to the
channel partners. It established its presence in 24 cities and now plans to take
it to 30 cities by the end of this year. The newly opened offices are in cities
like Jammu, Coimbatore, Guwahati, Surat and Madurai.
Iris gets 30 percent of its business from B and C-class cities and they are
also planning to add more branches to have better reach in these unexplored
regions. This will subsequently mean more number of partners to its existing
network of 1,400 partners.
Last year, it partnered with HCL Peripherals and Raritan. Iris is strong in
the northern part of the country that brings in 50 percent of its business. This
is followed by south that makes up for 28 percent of the total business.
Among the prominent orders is a business worth Rs 10 crore from a
Mumbai-based oil exploration company. Others include business from Kolkata-based
Techno India Group, Hyderabad's DQ Entertainment, Indian Railway Catering and
Tourism Corporate and Chennai-based Elcot. Iris also bagged major contracts from
Western Geco and TCS.
The company claimed that its flexibility is its major tool of growth besides
being accessible 24x7 to its channel. Buoyed by this feel good factor, it has
set the goal of
Rs 750 crore for the current fiscal for which it has carefully carved out the
business strategies.

HCL Infosystems:From Strength To Strength
The clear focus for HCL Infosystems during 2006-07 was to enhance value
for its thousands of channel partners by adding new products and services,
strengthen support infrastructure, and increase reach
For office automation products, HCL grew the channel for imaging products
from 110 channel partners to over 225, all over the country. HCL has now an
extensive distribution network across the country in more than 4,000 towns and
with more than 50,000 dealers to become the preferred choice for distributing
digital lifestyle products like mobile phones, iPods, and digital cameras.
Going a little beyond traditional IT and communications, HCL announced new
products and solutions that included digital signage solutions and low-cost
satellite. Besides this, the company expanded its portfolio with Toshiba L30
Portege R500 ultra-portable notebooks, Toshiba Stylish Satellite M200 series
notebooks, new models of Apple iPods, Plantronics PC headsets, Altec Lansing MP3
speakers, Kingston (for flash memory cards) and new digital cameras from Kodak
and Casio.
To make fast growing products like notebooks more accessible and affordable,
HCL took Toshiba budget notebooks at sub-Rs 30,000 price-point. Therefore the
channel reach for these was significantly expanded. The company also leveraged
here the rate contracts like DGS&D registration, where Toshiba is a more
established name, and exploited its strong sales channel support.
Last year, HCL won an award from Toshiba for Best Sales and Service in Asia
for its digital MFPs. Again, from Toshiba, it won the 'Toshiba Color Copier
Champion Award 2007' for improving overall customer approach and better
technical capability. HCL also got the 'Excellence Award for Distribution' from

Neoteric Infomatique :Donning The Enterprise Garb
Neoteric Infomatique signed up with HP, which gave life to its aspirations
of becoming a value-added disti offering enterprise-level solutions
Mumbai-based Neoteric Infomatique has been trying very hard to move away from
its image as a distributor for components. Last fiscal, it got a big break when
it signed up with HP for the distribution of PCs, servers, notebooks, and backup
storage like tape drives and libraries. The next step-up was a tie-up with Wipro
to facilitate distribution of notebooks, desktops and servers.
The flurry of tie-ups continued with the alliance with Brother International
for distribution of its inkjet and laser MFPs. Brother, which was earlier
distributing through the office automation and SI channel, tied-up with Neoteric
to cater to the consumer market. Neoteric also signed up Lenovo for distribution
in Gujarat. It also began shipping Wipro PCs and servers to the consumer and
commercial channel.
Last fiscal, Neoteric took this basket of offerings and finally made headway
into the solution provider and system integrator segment. It is now seeking more
vendors to sign- up with which will provide it with all blocks of enterprise
solutions-networking, servers, online storage, security and software. This is
why the company was recently signed up as the national distributor of Avocent,
which is a large vendor of KVM switches worldwide.
The company also created a division to work with large-format retailers and
has signed up with nearly 25 LFRs, directly or as a fulfillment partner for its
vendors.
With acquisitions and participation in stake-holdings of other national
distributors, speculation has been on about Neoteric seeking a strategic partner
as well. The distribution house would like to have a partner that would help it
take its business overseas, but nothing was finalized last fiscal.

After a successful debut of its annual channel outreach program, the CBF

address partner grievance about vendor support
Rashi Peripherals had a very busy year. It moved its corporate headquarters
to a new place and then followed this with an implementation of SAP. It also
conducted the Channel Business Forum (CBF), an annual channel outreach program
in 39 cities last year. The event consisted of a live simulation of home, office
and gaming zones with the latest products on display. It also added 12 more
branches in D- and E-class cities.
The company thus managed to grow its agency turnover by 20 percent to touch
Rs 480 crore in 2006-07. It also got several accolades from its vendors. Some of
them were the 'Sultan of the year' award from HP for PSG products, the 'Best
Performing Distributor in South Asia' and 'Key Distributor in India' from
Logitech, as well as acknowledgement as best distributor for base business for
laptop in H1 by HP again.
One key movement within the company's managerial echelons was the ouster of
Rajesh Goenka. He was the divisional head for Rashi, had been with the company
for over five years, and was the front face to the channel.
In the tie-ups spectrum, Rashi tied up with American Power Corporation,
Jetway and SanDisk in 2006-07.
It recently tied up with HP ProCurve for its complete portfolio for LAN, WAN,
and WLAN segments. Another vendor alliance was with Leadtek Research, an
exclusive workstation partner of Nvidia in Asia (except Japan), to expand its
Quadro market and provide service to customers in India. Rashi is already a
partner for Nvidia in the region. AMD has also appointed Rashi Peripherals as

Savex Computers :A Good Show
One of the fastest growing service providers of last fiscal Savex
Computers plans to a make inroads into tier-2 and -3 cities to keep up this
momentum
In 2006-07, Savex Computers achieved a growth rate of 36 percent growing its
revenues from Rs 296 crore to Rs 459 crore. Maximum of this revenue came from
the West and South, with the two contributing 35 and 34 percent respectively.
The northern market pitched in 28 percent to the overall revenue, while East
registered marginal three percent.
Savex Computers opened three new branches in 2006-07, taking the total number
of branches to 33. Besides the opening of new branches, it also saw an increase
in the number of employees by a whopping 20 percent. Of these, 76 people are
involved in sales and marketing, and the company hopes to induct another 14
people to this division in the current fiscal.
Savex added HP consumer desktops, laptops and printers to its existing list
of brands during 2006-07. The HP tie-up was most significant development for
Savex because it was lacking a printer range in its portfolio since it
discontinued selling Lexmark two years ago.
HP has signed up Savex to distribute its Presario range of consumer PCs and
notebooks in the northern, southern and western regions. Almost half of this
distributor's revenue came from the HP product line. The company's Samsung
business also witnessed good traction boosted by the increased demand for TFT
and LCD panels.
This fiscal, the company hopes to leverage the Presario sales to push HP
pavilion products more effectively in the market. It has already tied up with
large-format retailers like Croma, eZone, Reliance, etc to sell these

Maxtone Electronics :Slow But Steady
The opening of two new branch offices was the highlight for Maxtone

Maxtone Electronics rose from 11th to 10th position on DQ Channels Silver
Club rankings. Its turnover for 2006-07 was Rs 270 crore, 28 percent higher than
its turnover for 2005-06 of Rs 220 crore.
More than half of Maxtone Electronics' revenue came from the western region
which contributed to around 61 percent of its revenue, while the northern region
contributed to 20 percent of the company's revenue. In the region-wise revenue,
contriÂÂbution pie chart for Maxtone Electronics, the southern and eastern
regions had relatively smaller share of the pie with 9 and 10 percent,
respectively.
The SME/SMB segment contributed to only three percent of Maxtone Electronics'
overall revenue, while the contribution of the SOHO segment to Maxtone's total
revenue was around five percent. The banking and financial services industries'
contribution six percent, which was an increase by half a percent from 2005-06.
A major portion of Maxtone's revenue came from the reseller and system
integrator businesses amounting to 75 percent of the company's overall turnover.
Maxtone does not expect this contribution percentage to go down in the future.
It maintain that as business increases, the channel contribution will hover
around 75 percent. At the same time, it expects a better uptake from the retail
segment, which is currently bring in seven percent revenue. This is largely
because of the opening up of the retail environment in India and the increasing
presence of large format retailers and digital lifestyle outlets.
There was an increase in the number of employees working with Maxtone
Electronics from 200. This was in part due to its newly opened branch offices in
Raipur and Indore. This takes the total number of its office to 14, excluding
the head-office. With the number of branch offices going up, the number of
channel partners is also on the rise. Another feather in Maxtone Electronics'
cap was added when Seagate awarded it with the 'Most Strategic Premium Partner'
award.
Maxtone has made a mark in the IT business in India with its own brands HIS
and Maxforce in the market for products like PCs, motherboards, graphic cards,

Maxtone is the distributor for Compaq Presario desktops, laptops, spares,

With a growth of 25 percent last year, Supertron Electronics is the first

A non-stop growth seems to be the mantra for this heavyweight player from the
East. Last fiscal was a memorable year for Supertron Electronics. It bagged the
national distribution award for Seagate, following the fallout of the six-year
old global distribution tie-up between Seagate and eSys Technologies.
Supertron has been selling Seagate for some time now, and the brand
contributes almost 40 percent to its overall revenue. Appointment as a national
distributor of the vendor vindicated its stand that loyalty always pays. The
other significant tie-ups of Supertron during last fiscal were its appointment
as a distributor for Asrock and Asus for their range of motherboards and card
sets.
The company further enhanced its distribution network by adding more branches
across India than the previous year. Opening branches in Dehradun, Chandigarh,
Indore and Cochin has not only helped to increase its business volume, but also
gave the company new markets to explore .
The company has also achieved considerable growth through its distribution of
Transcend range of products, after its official appointment as distributor in
June 2006. Additionally, Supercomp, the self-owned brand of Supertron has also
successfully established its popularity in the market, especially in the
upcountry. Supercomp offers good bottomline to Supertron while Seagate and Acer
have been instrumental in its topline growth.
Apart from this, Supertron has also increased focus on its post-sale service

region contributing only seven percent, while the western region contributed the
maximum at 45 percent of the total revenue. The IT/ITeS/telecom market segments
were the major revenue contributors at 62 percent. The number of employees saw a

From a company offering just dot-matrix printers and PC motherboards , today
Mediaman's product line include over 2,000 memory modules for a multitude of

Mediaman has four divisions, and The Notebook Lab is its service center for
laptops. It also has a retail presence through Here and Now, but this business
has not seen any uptake for the past few years. Besides this, the company has
its own Bravish range of peripherals, which too has been gradually loosing

After seeing a dip in its revenues in 2005-06, Priya bounced back with a

After a stagnant growth in the revenues over the last three years, Priya made
a comeback. Its revenues for 2006-07 was Rs 166 crore, which is an increase of
20 percent over the previous year's turnover of Rs 132 crore. In 2005-06, the
company had posted a negative growth of 12 percent.
Priya, a part of the Priya Group, is a distributor of computer technology
products. The company has more than 1,000 dealers spread across the country.
Headquartered in Mumbai with branches located in 20 major cities, the
distributor has a strong presence in western and southern regions of the
country. A national distributor of MSI motherboards, Priya added MSI's graphic
cards to its product portfolio last fiscal and will distribute it nationally.
The company has been dealing with MSI for about seven years now, and will target
MSI's ATI Radeon-based graphic cards at southern and western regions.
In the early months of 2006, the company introduced VXL thin-client devices
in North India. It positioned this product to meet the needs of BPOs and the
education sector. The company faced a minor set back when Viewsonic replaced
Priya with Compuage Infocom as its distributor for IT products. But Viewsonic
retained Priya for LCD TVs and other consumable electronics. But Priya was not
very happy to be ousted out of the Viewsonic IT products distribution and made
its displeasure known. It was reported that the high targets set by Viewsonic
was the reason for the fallout, but the vendor wanted to smooth the matter by
giving Priya the rights to the consumer electronics. This fiscal, Priya plans to
add more products to its portfolio. But the core focus of the company remains

Compage Computers :Focusing On Retail
Last fiscal, Compage Computers had 70 percent of its overall revenue
coming in from retail. No wonder then that the company is looking at
establishing its retail presence more strongly this year
Compage Computers scored a satisfying growth of 30 percent in 2006-07,
growing its revenues from Rs 104 crore in 2005-06 to Rs 148 crore. Most of this
business came from the retail initiatives the company undertook, contributing
close to 70 percent to the overall turnover. Incidentally, Compage is the only
distributor from Hyderabad to have made it to the Silver Club.
It is interesting to note that in 2004-05 Compage's revenue was Rs 148 crore
and then the company found its business going through a slump to touch Rs 104
crore. The irony of this situation is that last fiscal it again managed to touch
the revenue mark of Rs 148 crore. The distributor pegs this turnaround to two
simple aspects - focus and tenacity.
There were no new vendor alliances that the company entered into in the last
fiscal. This was also because it made a conscious decision to focus on its
existing partnerships with TVS-E, Samsung, LG, HP, Intel, Epson, Sony, Seagate,
Microsoft and Wipro for this year too.
This focus helped the company in pushing these brands further to the channel,
rather than getting caught up with the promotion of any new vendor. Compage
instead tried to popularize the new launches from each of these vendors, gaining
more mindshare in the Hyderabad market.
The retail channel ratio is currently at 70:30, but Compage does not expect
this to change, because it sees equal growth in both these segments. Also, the
channel is the preferred conduit to market where the company does not have any
retail presence.
The company has so far limited its operations in Hyderabad and Secunderabad
with three offices here. This fiscal, it has set itself a mandate to increase
its presence to
other cities Andhra Pradesh.
'When asked why the company is still limiting itself to its hometown state,
the answer goes back to the company's main buzzword, which is focus. It does not
want to enter into too many markets at the same time. Rather it would like to
spread its presence gradually, so that its risks on low return on investment is
minimal.
Last fiscal, the company had vendor certification from LG and Samsung, and
the highest sales achievement certification from HP, to its credit.

Data Care Corporation :Holding Fort Securely
Shifting its focus from trading, the disti is now looking at value-added
distribution to cross the Rs 200 crore mark
Pune-based Data Care Corporation is said to be the city's largest
distributor, a claim that is currently uncontested, and looking at the company's
track record, one can see why. Last fiscal, the company posted revenue of Rs 140
crore, registering a profit of 11 percent over the previous fiscal's turnover of
Rs 125 crore.
Data Care recently started an after-sales support center in Pune, as well as
a warranty repair center. It now services laptops, printers and other IT
products. The company, which was earlier into trading, has now started offering
demonstrations to its customers, which signifies its shift into value-added
distribution. It also started offering greater and flexible credit as per the
requirement of its customers, which helped it sell to a larger network of
partners.
Last year, the company invested significantly to increase its manpower
strength. Its sales personnel stood at 225 in 2006-07 as compared to 150 at the
end of 2005-06.
The reason for Data Care Corporation's success lies in service, where it
gives importance to its customers' problems and doesn't wait for the
manufacturers to give replacements.
The other major reason for Data Care Corporation's success lies in the
virtual bank, which it offers its retailers, wherein it grants credit without
any interest or security. Retailers find it hard to obtain finance from banks so
Data Care grants liberal credit instantly. The company pays interest to the bank
for offering credit facility to retailers. The basic requirement for obtaining
the credit is three months' bank statements and a copy of the retailer's balance
sheet. These are reviewed and the disti takes a decision in 24 hours.
