1.Ingram
Micro India:Numero Uno Once Again
Though the Ingram Micro-Tech Pacific merger took place over a year and
half ago, it has still not got the official stamp from the governmental
agencies. But this has in no way stopped the company from growing
Ingram Micro has once more monopolized the top slot at the DQ Channels Silver
Club at the numero uno slot. Though it continued its stint at the top, its
growth rate wasn't too good, considering it was a forerunner, and it did not
fare as well when compared to other companies in the Silver Club.
Ingram Micro posted a total turnover of Rs 6,896 crore in 2006-07, of which
12 percent is estimated to have come from its mobility business and therefore
was discounted from the agency revenues considered in this listing. This brought
its agency revenues to rest Rs 6,068 crore.
The merger between Ingram and Tech PacifOnce Again ic, which took place over
two years ago, has still not got the legal nod from the Bangalore court. A case
filed by Samsung claiming that the merger affected the business interests is
also pending in the court. Nonetheless, the company is currently doing business
with Samsung and is operating under the aegis of Ingram Micro.
It is interesting to note that the distribution powerhouse managed to
continue adding brands, which helped it further in value business, rather than
focusing merely on the volume end. This explains its tie-up with companies like
Symbol, Wyse, Adaptec, RedHat, Hitachi Data Systems and Snap Server. Ingram is
seeing good uptake from its storage business and has increasingly started
seeking vendors that have high-end enterprise level products, which are not sold
on the push strategy. The components busiÂness subsequently saw sluggish growth
due to this change in focus.

2.Redington (India):Crossing A Landmark
New tie-ups helped Redington to cross the Rs 5,000 crore milestone, with a
growth of 19 percent in 2006-07. Its IPO, to raise Rs 150 crore, was
oversubscribed 43 times
Redington has had a good year, posting a turnover of Rs 5,022 crore in
2006-07. This was a 19 percent growth over the previous year's turnover of Rs
4068 crore.
One major reason for this growth was its tie-up with big vendors like Sun
Microsystems. Other vendor alliances entered into last year include Telelogic
for its lifecycle management software, Sonicwall for its security appliances,
Cyberoam for its unified threat management solution and Apple India for its
complete product range.
Of these, Redington has pegged high hopes on Apple products, especially in the
consumer electronics space.
But the highlight of the year for Redington was its IPO in Jan 2007, to raise
Rs 150 crore. The issue was oversubscribed 43 times. This makes it the second
largest IPO in the channel space in the last two years, after Tulip Services.
Besides this, the company also bagged some big government projects. These
include one from the Tamil Nadu ELCOT Project for supply to government schools
and departments and a project for the Punjab Schools' computerization order.
It undertook a VAT implementation project for the Bihar State Electronics
Development Corporation at Patna and also worked with the Indian Overseas Bank
to provide data-auditing solutions.
36 percent of Redington's business came from the sales of peripherals,
supplies and consumer PCs, while systems sales constituted for 22 percent.
Networking and enterprise solutions brought in 10 and seven percent
respectively, while the component business accounted for 17 percent.

3.Esys Technologies:Busybody Distribution House
Last December, Teledata Informatics pumped in $105 million into eSys
Technologies to help spur its growth further. The distribution house lost
Seagate as its vendor and its Regional Director, R Govindan
Singapore-headquartered IT distribution house and PC manufacturer eSys
Technologies signed an agreement with Teledata Informatics for a strategic
investment of up to $105 million in eSys. The investment will help eSys continue
and consolidate its growth, which has seen it growing from first year revenues
of S$187 million to revenues of S$3 billion in 2005. This injection of capital
from Teledata is bound to help eSys further its business by aiding acquisitions.
While eSys gained the moolah, the year was also marked by some big losses.
Seagate terminated the distribution agreements with eSys, amidst allegations of
irregularities in compliance to the agreement. Seagate requested an intrusive
audit of eSys' documents, which the latter denied and instead alleged that
Seagate had often refused shipment as per the agreement.
The next loss was the exit of R Govindan, Regional Director-South Asia, eight
months after he moved to Singapore. Meanwhile, the company announced an
investment of Rs 1,000 crore in India, including a Rs 250 crore PC manufacturing
plant at Nalagarh in Himachal Pradesh and a Rs 100 crore investment for a global
backoffice in Chandigarh technology park.
Besides, the company was kept busy with several tie-ups during the year.
Turbolinux, the Japan-based linux solutions provider, signed up with eSys to
leverage on its presence in B and C-category cities, where Turbolinux has no
presence. Through this tie-up, eSys acquired a product portfolio that includes
Turbolinux's desktop operating system, server operating systems, applications
etc.

5.Iris Computers:Upcountry All The Way
Aggressively expanding in the B and C-class cities held this national
level distributor in good stead. Coupled with its strategy to increase its
product line, Iris managed to get a good mindshare among the channel
Touching a turnover of Rs 572 crore, Iris Computers continued its presence in
the Silver Club for the last eight years. What helped it in this endeavor is the
expansion of its product line, increasing the number of its branches and
widening its channel base.
The major tools that helped Iris achieve this milestone were its
aggressiveness to expand across the country and provide maximum support to the
channel partners. It established its presence in 24 cities and now plans to take
it to 30 cities by the end of this year. The newly opened offices are in cities
like Jammu, Coimbatore, Guwahati, Surat and Madurai.
Iris gets 30 percent of its business from B and C-class cities and they are
also planning to add more branches to have better reach in these unexplored
regions. This will subsequently mean more number of partners to its existing
network of 1,400 partners.
Last year, it partnered with HCL Peripherals and Raritan. Iris is strong in
the northern part of the country that brings in 50 percent of its business. This
is followed by south that makes up for 28 percent of the total business.
Among the prominent orders is a business worth Rs 10 crore from a
Mumbai-based oil exploration company. Others include business from Kolkata-based
Techno India Group, Hyderabad's DQ Entertainment, Indian Railway Catering and
Tourism Corporate and Chennai-based Elcot. Iris also bagged major contracts from
Western Geco and TCS.
The company claimed that its flexibility is its major tool of growth besides
being accessible 24x7 to its channel. Buoyed by this feel good factor, it has
set the goal of
Rs 750 crore for the current fiscal for which it has carefully carved out the
business strategies.
