India rejects one laptop per child program

Indian government has turned down the proposal of $100 laptops from Nicholas
Negroponte's one laptop per child (OLPC) project. The government opined that
what are needed for schools at present are more teachers and better teaching
tools. By introducing laptops, the creativity, thinking and analytical
capabilities of students will suffer. The aim of the project was to get the PCs
into the hands of millions of children in countries including Brazil, China,
India and Nigeria, as an educational tool. The first working prototype of the
laptop was shown in May and the OLPC has already received its first order from
Nigeria. The African country placed an order of one million of the Linux
laptops, although the devices won't go into production until orders for at
least five million have been received.
