Jalan Infotech : Revival Hopes

Established in 1987, Jalan Infotech currently has five branches across the
eastern market. It has emerged as one of the big daddies of IT biz, not only in
eastern India, but all over the country.

But this company, too, fell prey to the global slowdown and its revenue
remained flat with revenues remaining at Rs 160 crore.

Its performance was good, as far as distribution of Lenovo products was
concerned. In FY'2006-07, it fetched a total business of around Rs 90 crore to
the company. Previously, Jalan Infotech expanded its distributorship portfolio,
and became the regional distributor for LG notebook and computers.

It also got the sole distributorship rights over Zenith PC. However, this FY,
the company's revenue figures sank considerably.

Meanwhile, Jalan has now established itself in its retail ventures. With two
outlets located at prime locations in Kolkata operating successfully, the
company is now concentrating on its retail business after losing out in a big
way in sub-distribution business.

Last year, the company had tied-up with Finolex to distri­bute their range of
networking cables and networking passive components for Kolkata. It also
collaborated with HCL as a distributor for West Bengal and Orissa. However, with
the change in business model of Zenith PC and Finolex, the company has suffered
consi­derable losses.

Sony and Lenovo continue to feature in its portfolio. With all these
additional develop­ments, Jalan Infotech is set to be in a revival mode in the
sub-distribution business next FY.
