Moon targets children with its computers

Keeping children as the target customer, Mumbai-based Moon Computers Mfg. Ind. has introduced a complete new range of children computers suitable for kids in the age group of 2 to 18 year.

Currently, it has made 10 models available under the brand name of "Moon" specifically designed to perform certain activities just like the real computer. These electronic education devices weighs less than 1 kg and some of them even can perform Basic computer programming.

"These devices can be called a learning aid," says Nilesh Shah, Director, Moon Computers. "The purpose is to enhance child skills in all the possible subjects through these talking mputers," he adds.

Moon Computers has been exclusively importing and marketing these 'learning aids' since 1996 from UK-based VTech.

Some of these computers look very similar to laptops, featuring a large LCD screen and full alphanumeric QWERTY keyboard. Most of these computers have built-in word processor, spell checker and printing capabilities. The price for these computers range from Rs 2,500 to Rs 9,500 depending up on the activities and age group the products are targeted at.

"These computers allow children to create, store, print their very own reports, letters and documents," says Nilesh. As far as service support is concerned, Moon promises a 1-year non-comprehensive warranty.

Moon has 35 distributors selling these electronic learning devices across the country. In Mumbai, Moon is directly dealing with 20 dealers for selling these devices. "We have been selling on an average 5,000 pieces every month since the time we introduced these products," says Nilesh. The company is currently looking at expanding its distributor base in uncovered 

regions.

Its plans also include bringing in such computers with Internet surfing capabilities.
