Motorola recently announced that its board of directors has
unanimously elected Edward J Zander to succeed Christopher B Galvin as chairman
and CEO of the company. Edward, 56, most recently was MD of Silver Lake
Partners, a leading private equity fund focused on investments in technology
industries. Before that he held the post of President and COO at Sun
Microsystems. Mike Zafirovski will remain president and COO of Motorola.
On behalf of the Motorola Board of Directors, John Pepper, Jr,
Director and Chairman, CEO Search Committee, says, "The board is delighted
to announce Ed Zander as Motorola's new chairman and CEO. Ed is recognized as
one of the most outstanding business leaders and intellects in the field of
technology and business operations. He will bring Motorola not only a wealth of
experience but a keen understanding of the emerging challenges and opportunities
in the communications space."
"Motorola is a global icon with a powerful base of
technology, customers and employee assets that are invaluable to millions of
users everyday," says Edward. "I am proud and honored to be at the
helm of Motorola, a company that is rich in its 75-year history and stands at
the center of the communications technology industry today."
Edward brings more than 25 years of experience in technology
companies. During his tenure at Sun Microsystems, Edward grew the company to $18
billion in revenues, established it as the number one company in the server
market; and built it to be a pre-eminent supplier of network infrastructure. He
also oversaw the company's manufacturing, research and development, sales and
marketing as well as clearly established Sun as an industry leader in systems
and software. Prior to joining Sun in 1987, Edward held senior management
