Follow UsMumbai: The Mumbai police has confiscated as many as 28 laptops, allegedly stolen from different parts of the financial capital of the country on Jan 9, 2009. These laptops were sold as second hand or used machines at a shop in Lamington Road. However, police have not made any arrests in this regard, as investigations were going on at the time of filing this report.
“We are carrying out investigations and will soon be able to nab the culprits behind these thefts,” said Babasaheb Bendre, Investigating Police Officer, Chembur Police Station, who has carried out the operation.
The machines were confiscated on Jan 9, after police got information that stolen laptops were being sold at a shop in Lamington Road. An undercover cop posing as a customer went to the shop named Plug N Play Technologies and asked for a second-hand laptop. He was given a laptop bought from the nearby Side Walk Systems. On checking the serial number of the machine, the cop realized that the laptop was a stolen one. "We immediately raided the shop and recovered 28 laptops," said Bendre. He said that police has not arrested anyone, as prime facie evidence showed that the shop owners are not behind these thefts. Besides, the police stated that both of them are cooperating with the police as well.
Amit Jain of Side Walk Systems claimed that only two of the laptops were stolen, which were given to him by someone, though he refused to reveal the identity of the person. "I have imported the remainder of the laptops and have produced relevant documents on my behalf and have been given clean chit by the police,” a furious Jain clarified.
On the other hand, despite repeated attempts we were unable to reach Rushab Shah of Plug N Play Technologies. On calling his office, the operator claimed to have no clue of the incident.
Meanwhile, officials from the Trade Association of IT (TAIT) stated that while they were aware of this development, they would not want to comment on it as both parties are not the members of the association.
