NetApp Acquires JetStream Software to Accelerate VMware Disaster Recovery to the Cloud
NetApp, the intelligent data infrastructure company, has announced its acquisition of JetStream Software, an innovator in VMware disaster recovery (DR), continuous data protection, and workload mobility.

The strategic acquisition expands NetApp's data management and cyber resilience portfolio, allowing enterprise IT teams to protect, recover, and migrate VMware vSphere workloads running on non-NetApp third-party storage directly to first-party cloud storage offerings, such as Azure NetApp Files, AWS FSx for NetApp ONTAP, and Google Cloud NetApp Volumes.

    Unlocking Cross-Platform VMware Disaster Recovery

As enterprises evaluate hybrid cloud adoption strategies, transferring mission-critical VMware virtual machines (VMs) without operational disruption, high latency, or costly refactoring remains a major hurdle. Disaster recovery serves as the logical entry point for cloud transition, allowing organisations to maintain cloud-based failover targets before fully migrating production workloads.

While NetApp’s proprietary SnapMirrortechnology remains the benchmark replication engine for native ONTAP-to-ONTAP storage environments, JetStream Software expands NetApp’s total addressable market by extending protection capabilities to the broader VMware installed base running on heterogeneous, non-NetApp storage arrays.
The combined technology stack offers key operational advantages:

    • Storage-Agnostic Replication: Protects VMware vSphere environments regardless of the underlying primary storage hardware (SAN, NAS, or HCI) without requiring SAN-level mirroring.
    • Near-Zero RPO / RTO Recovery: Utilises vSphere APIs for I/O Filtering (VAIO) to capture data writes in real time, delivering continuous data protection (CDP) for low Recovery Point Objectives (RPO) and Recovery Time Objectives (RTO).
    • First-Party Cloud Destination: Seamlessly fails over workloads into native hyperscaler storage instances—including Azure NetApp Files—allowing enterprises to scale cloud compute resources on demand during DR events.
    • Phased Cloud Migration: Enables organisations to establish cloud DR pipelines first, validating application performance before executing non-disruptive, live production migrations.
George Kurian, Chief Executive Officer at NetApp, emphasised how data availability underpins modern enterprise AI and cloud strategies:
“Data has become the foundation for business growth, AI innovation, and operational continuity. As customers look to unlock greater value from their data while strengthening protection against disruption, bringing JetStream into NetApp expands our ability to help keep their data secure, available, and ready for what comes next. This acquisition further positions NetApp as a leader in enterprise resilience and data protection.”
Pravjit Tiwana, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Cloud Storage and Services at NetApp, highlighted user choice in cloud migration timing:
“Customers want to move to the cloud on their schedule, not their infrastructure’s schedule. JetStream helps customers start with disaster recovery and seamlessly evolve to production in the cloud. Together, we’re making our cloud offerings within hyperscalers the easiest destination for enterprise VMware workloads.”
Tom Critser, Co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer at JetStream Software, noted the global scale resulting from the acquisition:
“Customers want solutions that help them evolve their environments without adding complexity. Joining NetApp allows us to bring our technology to more organisations worldwide and deliver even greater value by combining our expertise with NetApp’s industry-leading data services and cloud storage portfolio.”
By uniting JetStream Software’s storage-agnostic VMware DR platform with NetApp's intelligent data infrastructure, NetApp simplifies multi-cloud data protection, enabling enterprises to protect hybrid workloads, mitigate ransomware risks, and execute cloud migrations at their own pace.
