
The launch of the New Relic AI agent capabilities marks a notable step in the evolution of IT operations automation. With the introduction of New Relic Autopilot and New Relic Ground Truth, the company is positioning its platform for a future where AI agents become active participants in managing and maintaining digital infrastructure rather than simply monitoring it.
The announcement reflects a broader shift in enterprise technology. As AI agents increasingly handle operational tasks, traditional dashboards and manual investigations may become less central. Instead, AI systems are expected to consume observability data directly through APIs, analyse conditions, and take informed actions with minimal human involvement.
Two Paths to AI-Driven ITOps
New Relic’s strategy offers organisations two distinct approaches. New Relic Autopilot acts as an automated SRE agent managed by New Relic. It begins investigating incidents as soon as alerts are triggered, helping teams identify root causes, evaluate possible actions, and accelerate response times.
Autopilot also brings specialised expertise through domain-specific agents focused on technologies such as Kubernetes and Kafka. By combining organizational knowledge, historical runbooks, and integrations with platforms like Jira and GitHub, the system aims to reduce operational overhead while preserving institutional knowledge across teams.
At the same time, New Relic Ground Truth serves organizations that prefer to use their own AI agents. Rather than replacing existing tools, it provides direct access to New Relic’s observability data substrate, allowing platforms such as GitHub Copilot, Claude Code, AWS DevOps, or custom orchestrators to work with richer operational insights.

The bigger takeaway is not just another AI feature release. It highlights how observability platforms are becoming the foundation for AI-driven ITOps. As AI agents gain greater responsibility, access to accurate operational data becomes critical. New Relic is effectively positioning its observability layer as the source of truth that powers autonomous decision-making.
