Sandisk R&D investment hits USD 200 million in India

Sandisk is putting more weight behind its India operations as the country takes on a larger role in the company’s global product development network. The company is investing around USD 200 million annually in R&D in India, after nearly USD 2 billion of investment over the past decade.

The shift is significant because India is no longer being positioned only around manufacturing. Sandisk’s local teams are increasingly involved in product architecture, design and low-volume manufacturing, giving the country a wider role across the product cycle.

Sandisk R&D investment Builds a Bigger Engineering Base

Sandisk has around 3,000 engineers in India, compared with roughly 7,000 to 8,000 globally. That puts India at around 25–30% of its worldwide engineering workforce.

The India centre works on SSDs for laptops and other storage products, while enterprise solutions are developed by teams across India and other global locations. Around 60–70% of Sandisk products are estimated to be developed or built through its India operations.

This makes the Sandisk R&D investment more than a simple spending commitment. It reflects a growing dependence on Indian engineering teams for product development, design and technology work.

Flash Memory India Role Grows With AI Demand

The rise of AI and data-centre infrastructure is adding another layer to the opportunity. AI workloads require large amounts of memory and storage, increasing demand from cloud providers and enterprise customers.

That demand is also putting pressure on pricing and supply allocation. Sandisk reported $8.97 billion in fiscal Q4 2026 revenue, up 372% year-on-year and 51% sequentially. According to available reports, around two-thirds of that growth came from higher pricing, with the rest driven by higher volumes.

For Flash memory India and storage markets, the changing demand mix is also affecting consumer segments, with higher component costs putting pressure on PC manufacturers.

SSD Manufacturing India Could Gain From Local Demand

Sandisk is responding to supply constraints through product designs that can work with a smaller DDR memory footprint while also securing component supplies.

The company is also calling for greater attention to India’s wider IT equipment ecosystem, including laptops, servers, peripherals and components. A stronger domestic market for complete IT systems could encourage manufacturers to source more components locally.
