SemIndia to set up India's first chip facilityÂ

SemIndia announced
that it would establish India's first semiconductor Assembly-Test-Mark-Pack (ATMP)
plant. The ATMP facility will be set-up during the course of 2006, according to
a press statement. The facility will offer services to manufacturers of
integrated circuits, including allowing AMD to augment its regional assembly and
test requirements.

This investment is a
step towards, and yet independent of the announcement made by SemIndia, in
November 2005, to set-up a Semiconductor Fab in India. Highlighting details of
the initiative, Vinod K Aggarwal, chairman of the board, president and CEO of
SemIndia, said, “We continue to work with AMD to establish a strong
semiconductor ecosystem in the country. The ATMP facility is the first logical
step in our vision to make India a semiconductor manufacturing destination.”

On the location of the
Fab, Agarwal said, “We are at a stage where we have to select one of the three
short-listed locations for the Fab City, and we are working towards announcing
the chosen destination this month. We are progressing with the Fab City project
in parallel, and the ATMP is expected to be located in the same Fab City.”
