
Okta has introduced a new blueprint for the secure agentic enterprise, aimed at helping organisations govern and secure the rapidly growing ecosystem of AI agents. Alongside the framework, the company announced Okta for AI Agents, a platform designed to provide visibility, control and governance across the full lifecycle of AI agents.
As enterprises increasingly adopt AI-driven automation, security models built for human identities are proving inadequate. Okta’s blueprint addresses this shift by helping organisations answer three critical questions: Where are my agents? What can they connect to? What can they do?
Addressing the Rise of Shadow AI
The rapid proliferation of AI agents, both sanctioned and unsanctioned, has created significant security blind spots. According to recent industry insights, a majority of organisations have already encountered AI-related security incidents, yet only a small fraction treat AI agents as independent identities.
Ric Smith emphasised the urgency of adopting new security models:
“AI agents are evolving faster than any software before them, making traditional security models obsolete. With this blueprint, we enable organisations to discover shadow agents, secure connection points, and maintain a ‘kill switch’ to protect against evolving risks.”
Okta for AI Agents: A Governance Platform
Available from April 30, 2026, Okta for AI Agents serves as a comprehensive platform to manage AI identities and enforce security policies. It enables organisations to discover both known and shadow AI agents, register agents as governed, identity-based entities, control access to applications, APIs and data sources, and instantly revoke access to mitigate risks
The platform extends Okta’s identity-first security model to non-human entities, treating AI agents as first-class identities within enterprise environments.
Key Capabilities of the Blueprint
1. Discover and Register AI Agents
Okta expands its Integration Network (OIN) with support for leading AI platforms such as Boomi, DataRobot and Google Vertex AI.
This enables organisations to import, identify and govern agents while assigning human ownership and accountability.
2. Control What Agents Can Access
The platform introduces an Agent Gateway, acting as a centralised control layer to manage interactions between AI agents and enterprise resources.
Additional features include Privileged credential vaulting and rotation, API access management with least-privilege enforcement, and real-time monitoring and audit logging
3. Govern What Agents Can Do
To prevent misuse or unintended actions, Okta enables granular authorisation and risk-based controls. A key feature is Universal Logout, a “kill switch” that can instantly revoke all agent access across systems if anomalous behaviour is detected.
The platform also integrates governance workflows, enabling organisations to assign ownership to agents, conduct access reviews, and maintain audit trails for compliance

As AI systems evolve into autonomous, multi-agent environments capable of executing complex workflows, enterprises face growing challenges around governance, compliance and security.
Okta’s blueprint introduces a structured approach to securing these environments by combining identity management, real-time monitoring and policy-driven controls. The initiative also highlights the need for industry-wide collaboration to establish standards for securing AI-driven ecosystems.
By embedding governance into the AI lifecycle from the outset, Okta aims to help organisations transition from experimentation to secure, scalable AI adoption, ensuring that innovation does not come at the cost of security and trust.
