AI-Enabled Business Applications: Redefining Enterprise Productivity

In the traditional sense, enterprise software was known for its capacity to manage information, optimise processes, and perform transactions within business operations. In the modern world, AI is taking this kind of application software to a whole new level by making it intelligent enough to understand contexts, provide insights, automate processes, and offer suggestions based on those insights in real-time. Instead of merely tracking business activities, AI-powered software solutions help employees perform business operations in an efficient manner.

A Foundation Built on Scale 

The country has entered this stage from a relatively strong digital base. According to a report published by the Ministry of  Electronics and Information Technology, the share of the digital economy was estimated at 11.74% of the national income for 2022-23, amounting to approximately Rs. 31.64 lakh crore. The same assessment noted that the digital economy is close to five times more productive than the wider economy. Internet connections crossed 100 crore by June 2025,  giving businesses the connectivity layer on which intelligent applications depend.

Adoption Moves into the Mainstream 

Among enterprises, technology has moved well beyond experimentation. Government figures cite that 87% of Indian enterprises were actively using AI solutions by December 2025, with the country scoring 2.45 out of 4 on the NASSCOM AI Adoption Index. The market itself reflects this appetite. The  Competition Commission of India recorded the domestic AI market expanding to USD 7.63 billion in  2024, with projections placing it at USD 131.31 billion by 2032. These figures describe a base of users who increasingly expect their everyday tools to reason, recommend and assist.

From Records to Recommendations 

The practical change lies in how applications behave. In finance and accounting, software now reconciles entries, anticipates cash positions, and prepares draft reports for review. In sales and service, applications condense long customer histories, suggest responses and route enquiries to the right specialist. In human resources and procurement, they draft documentation, summarise policy, and pull the relevant details from large archives in seconds. In operations, they read demand signals and flag exceptions early, well before they affect delivery.

Each of these uses keeps people firmly in charge of judgement while passing repetitive groundwork to the system. Government analysis supports this framing, describing AI as best positioned to augment human work, particularly in complex and context-rich tasks where experience and discretion still carry the day.

Productivity as a Measurable Result 

The productivity case is increasingly grounded in evidence rather than expectation. Studies cited by the Press Information Bureau indicate that generative AI tools lift productivity by 14% overall, and by as much as 34 per cent among newer or less experienced workers, helping narrow skill gaps while improving service quality. The services sector, which contributes about 55.3 per cent of India's gross value added, stands to gain a great deal as finance, healthcare, education and communications weave these capabilities into daily workflows. At a national level, NITI Aayog estimates that wider AI  adoption could add USD 500-600 billion to GDP by 2035, much of it through productivity and efficiency gains across industry.

Building the Conditions for Lasting Value 

Sustained gains depend as much on people and processes as on technology. The labour market is responding accordingly. AI skills command a wage premium of about 28% in such roles and India’s technology and AI ecosystem already employs more than six million people. Public programs are growing the pool of talent, while clear data practices and thoughtful governance help organisations

deploy these applications with confidence. For most enterprises, the path forward is steady and deliberate: begin with well-defined use cases, measure outcomes carefully and scale what works.  The companies seeing the strongest returns tend to combine clean, well-organised data with teams that understand both the business and the tools, allowing each new capability to build on the last rather than stand alone.

A Considered Path Ahead 

The direction of travel is clear. As intelligent capabilities become a standard feature of business applications rather than a specialist add-on, the advantage will accrue to organisations that pair the technology with strong fundamentals, capable teams and sound judgement. For Indian enterprises,  the question is no longer whether AI will reshape productivity, but how effectively organisations can integrate it into everyday operations. Such businesses will be well placed to achieve improvements in efficiency, to better their customer experience and build a competitive advantage that can sustain itself over time because of their wise use of AI technology.
