Epson CONTOURJET brings Inkjet printing to 3D objects

Printing on a flat surface is only part of what digital inkjet technology can do. Epson is now taking the technology into more complex shapes with Epson CONTOURJET, a new brand for its Direct-to-Shape Printing System that combines Epson's inkjet and robotics technologies.

The system is designed to print directly onto three-dimensional objects with curved and uneven surfaces. Epson says the solution will target applications including sports equipment, automotive parts and industrial products as it expands globally.

Epson combines inkjet with six-axis robotics

At the centre of Direct-to-shape printing is Epson's compact PrecisionCore S800 printhead and a company-developed industrial six-axis robot. Together with proprietary trajectory control and image processing, the system can print across grooves, curves and other complex geometries.

The approach also changes how decoration processes can be handled. By digitalising conventional analogue printing, CONTOURJET can reduce manual work and space requirements while improving manufacturing efficiency.

For manufacturers handling shorter production runs or bespoke designs, the absence of printing plates and special materials also gives the system greater flexibility.

CONTOURJET brings efficiency into the print process

Material use is another part of the system's design. Epson says inkjet deposits ink only where and in the amounts required, reducing material consumption and waste compared with analogue processes.

The system is also being positioned as a complete solution rather than only a printer. Under Epson's new brand launch, CONTOURJET includes inks, software, implementation support and maintenance services.

More options for complex industrial objects

Epson has also enhanced the system with robots using linear motor drives and higher payload capacity, allowing larger and longer workpieces to be handled. A front-access design is intended to make servicing and maintenance easier.

Support for multicolour printing, including white ink and clear varnish, expands the range of possible decorative effects. Epson also works with partners to recommend inks and operating methods based on applications and substrates.

The solution will be showcased at PRINTING United Expo 2026 in Las Vegas from September 23 to 25, with samples produced using CONTOURJET.
