Infoblox and GoDaddy AI Agent roles explained

As AI agents become more active across websites, enterprise apps, and cloud platforms, a bigger question is starting to emerge: how will systems know which AI agents are real and which ones can be trusted? That is the challenge Infoblox and GoDaddy are now trying to address through a new push toward open internet standards.
The two companies announced support for complementary frameworks designed to help AI agents identify, discover, and verify one another using existing internet infrastructure. The move signals a broader industry effort to avoid a future where a few vendors control how AI agents operate across the web.
At the centre of this effort is DNS-AID Infoblox’s open approach for AI agent discovery, and Agent Name Service (ANS), a GoDaddy-backed framework focused on identity and verification. Both projects are being developed through IETF AI Agent Standards initiatives and are built around DNS and public key infrastructure rather than proprietary ecosystems.
Why AI Agent identity is becoming important
The announcement reflects a growing concern in the tech industry. As AI agents begin interacting with websites, APIs, enterprise systems, and users independently, organisations will need reliable ways to verify who those agents are and whether they are trustworthy.
GoDaddy’s Jared Sine argued that the internet already has a proven infrastructure capable of handling this challenge. According to him, DNS operates globally at internet scale and can support trusted AI identity without requiring entirely new systems.
Infoblox’s Wei Chen compared the current moment to the early days of the internet, when DNS replaced centralised directories with an open and federated model. The company believes the same approach can now help power an “agentic internet” where AI systems remain interoperable and decentralised.
DNS-AID and ANS divide responsibilities
The companies positioned the two frameworks as complementary rather than competing technologies.
DNS-AID focuses on discovery. It allows AI agents to publish metadata and capabilities using existing DNS technologies like DNSSEC, DANE, and SVCB records. This helps systems locate and evaluate AI agents without relying on closed platforms.
ANS, meanwhile, focuses on identity. It enables organisations to assign verifiable names to AI agents using domains they already own. In simple terms, ANS answers who the agent is, while DNS-AID helps explain what the agent can do.
This separation matters because enterprises increasingly want flexible AI deployments that are not tied to one cloud provider, registry, or vendor-controlled trust model.
A Push against closed AI ecosystems
A major theme running through the announcement is resistance to centralised AI infrastructure. Both companies repeatedly emphasised that no single vendor should control AI agent discovery, naming, or verification.
That message could resonate strongly with enterprises already dealing with fragmented AI ecosystems. Open standards may help businesses retain control over policies, metadata, and trust decisions while reducing dependency on proprietary reputation systems.
The companies are now calling on cloud providers, security firms, registrars, and agent platform vendors to participate in the standards process. If the industry aligns around these models, DNS could evolve from a web-addressing system into the trust layer for the next generation of AI-driven internet services.
