The Seqrite malware report paints a worrying picture for India’s manufacturing ecosystem. Tamil Nadu’s factories which were long considered the backbone of the country’s industrial growth are now facing a quieter but serious threat: malware silently spreading across production networks.
Findings from the India Cyber Threat Report 2026 show that malware infections are increasingly targeting industrial environments. The problem is not always visible at first. Systems continue to run. Production continues. But underneath, infected machines may already be working for cybercriminals.
Malware threats to manufacturing companies are rising
According to the Seqrite malware report , Tamil Nadu recorded 7.51 million malware detections between October 2024 and September 2025. This places the state seventh among the most targeted regions in India.
Chennai, the industrial heart of the state, recorded 4.27 million detections, ranking ninth among the most affected cities. Many of these attacks rely on modular malware loaders. These programs quietly disable security controls before deploying more dangerous threats like ransomware.
Other infections are Cryptojacking malware such as Nsis.Bitmin, which secretly uses computing resources for cryptocurrency mining, network infectors that spread across connected industrial machines, and malware that exploits unpatched endpoints inside production systems. For manufacturers, this means the risk is not just data theft. Entire production processes can be disrupted.

Some of this data later surfaces on dark web marketplaces, exposing companies to fraud and extortion. India’sDigital Personal Data Protection (DPDP) Act 2023 aims to address these risks through strict rules on data handling, breach reporting, and lawful processing. Companies failing to comply may face penalties of up to ₹250 crore.
