Sophos and OpenAI partnership expands AI defense

The Sophos and OpenAI partnership is taking frontier AI deeper into the managed service provider (MSP) channel. Sophos plans to bring OpenAI frontier models into Sophos Fusion, its connected AI-native cybersecurity defence system, giving approved partners a way to build new security services around AI.

The move is not simply about adding another AI capability. The larger idea is to place frontier AI inside a security system that already connects endpoint, network, email, cloud, identity and security operations. For MSPs, that could reduce the need to manage AI as a separate security layer.

Frontier AI enters the channel

Sophos Fusion is built around an open architecture where Sophos controls, and third-party integrations work within one connected system. The company plans to extend this model through OpenAI, using its frontier models to support detection, investigation and response.

This creates an opportunity for the Frontier AI cybersecurity channel, particularly for MSPs that already manage security workflows for customers. Instead of simply reselling another tool, partners can potentially build recurring services around AI-powered defence.

Sophos says its channel network includes more than 25,000 partners, including over 7,000 MSPs. That reach could be important as security providers look for practical ways to turn AI capabilities into services.

Protecting AI, not just using it

The partnership also focuses on the security of AI itself. Sophos AI Defence, planned for early access in August 2026, is designed to give organisations visibility into AI and Shadow AI use, enforce policies and help govern how sensitive data is used across AI models and tools.

Sophos intends to expand this protection with OpenAI, covering AI workloads, data and usage within the connected defence system.

This creates a two-sided approach: using AI to improve cybersecurity while also protecting the growing use of AI inside organisations.
