The Indian premium audio market is undergoing rapid expansion, driven by a growing demographic of music lovers and tech-savvy consumers demanding high-fidelity sound. Capitalising on this momentum, HARMAN, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Samsung Electronics, has announced the appointment of Shekhar Datta as its new Sales Management Leader for Consumer Audio India.
Based out of Gurugram, Datta will report directly to Philippe Rinckenberger, Sales Management Global Market, and is tasked with steering the company's next phase of market expansion across the subcontinent.
A cross-sector growth architect
Datta steps into the role with more than 15 years of experience scaling diverse consumer businesses. His background combines technology-driven business development with high-end retail execution, making him uniquely equipped to handle India's complex retail ecosystem.
His corporate trajectory spans leadership positions at top-tier organisations:
E-Commerce & Scale: Core business building and market expansion roles at Amazon India.
Consumer & Operations: Leadership insights from OYO, Ola (Weddingz.in), and Cummins India.
Regional Strategy: International experience with Johnson & Johnson (Bangladesh).
An alumnus of the Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Kozhikode, and the University of Calcutta, Datta balances academic rigour with deeply rooted on-the-ground operational capabilities.
The omnichannel mandate
In the premium electronics sector, modernising the sales pipeline requires a frictionless blend of offline experience centres and online retail availability. Datta’s appointment signals HARMAN’s intent to double down on an omnichannel framework. This strategy ensures that from digital discovery to physical unboxing, the consumer journey is seamless and immersive.
"Shekhar's proven track record in driving growth across diverse consumer sectors makes him the ideal leader to accelerate our Consumer Audio momentum in India," stated Philippe Rinckenberger. "His strategic vision and execution skills will strengthen our market presence and deliver exceptional experiences for Indian consumers."
Datta echoed this vision, stating his readiness to expand the brand's national footprint:
"Drawing on my experience in premium consumer electronics and omnichannel strategies, I look forward to expanding HARMAN's footprint and bringing innovative audio solutions to music lovers across the country."
Conclusion
As consumer audio shifts from standard hardware to personalised, connected smart devices, local leadership execution is what separates market leaders from competitors. By placing an omnichannel specialist at the helm of its Indian consumer division, HARMAN is ensuring that its legendary audio portfolio remains top-of-mind for India's evolving tech consumers.
