As AI coding assistants become a larger part of software development, enterprises face a new challenge: understanding what these tools are doing, how much they cost, and what risks they may introduce. New Relic is aiming to address that gap with the introduction of New Relic AI Coding Observability, a new open-source capability designed specifically for AI-assisted software development.

Bringing observability closer to the developer

The announcement reflects a growing shift in enterprise IT. While AI coding tools are increasingly helping developers generate code faster, many of these tools operate outside traditional monitoring frameworks. This creates visibility gaps across engineering, security, and operations teams.

New Relic's new capability extends observability into the coding stage itself. Instead of waiting until applications reach production, organisations can gain insight into how AI coding assistants are being used during development.

According to the company, the platform is designed to transform fragmented AI usage into a more governed, measurable, and auditable process.

Tackling cost, productivity, and governance challenges

One of the key themes behind the launch is operational control.

AI coding assistants are becoming a growing technology expense, yet many organisations have limited visibility into usage patterns and spending. New Relic AI Coding Observability is designed to help teams monitor AI-related costs, forecast budgets, and receive alerts before spending thresholds are reached.

The platform also focuses on productivity measurement. Rather than relying on anecdotal feedback, engineering leaders can evaluate the actual impact of AI coding tools through data-driven insights into development activities and workflows.

A vendor-neutral approach to AI coding

Another notable aspect is the platform's emphasis on openness and flexibility.

The solution is being built to support multiple AI coding assistants, including Claude Code, Cursor, GitHub Copilot, Windsurf, and Amazon Q. By leveraging OpenTelemetry and the Model Context Protocol (MCP), New Relic aims to provide a vendor-neutral environment that reduces dependency on a single AI provider.

The company is also positioning security and compliance as core pillars, offering a local-only mode designed to keep queries within private networks and support data sovereignty requirements.

The launch highlights an emerging reality: as AI-generated code becomes more common, visibility and governance are becoming just as important as productivity gains.

By extending observability into the development phase, New Relic is focusing on an area that many organisations are only beginning to address. New Relic AI Coding Observability is scheduled to be available as an open-source feature on June 23 at no additional cost, with standard ingest rates applying.
