XProtect VMS ROI study reveals a bigger shift towards security

The latest XProtect VMS ROI study highlights how video management systems are no longer being viewed only as security tools. Enterprises are increasingly treating them as operational intelligence platforms that can reduce investigation time, improve efficiency and lower long-term infrastructure costs. The independent Total Economic Impact study conducted by Forrester Consulting for Milestone Systems reflects this growing shift, especially as organisations continue looking for smarter ways to manage complex surveillance environments without increasing operational pressure.

The study evaluated the financial and operational impact of using Milestone XProtect open platform VMS through interviews with decision-makers already using the platform. Based on customer input, Forrester created a composite organisation with 2,500 employees, 500 cameras and annual revenue of USD 600 million. The findings showed measurable operational gains over three years, including faster investigations, reduced administrative effort and lower integration costs. According to the study, the composite organisation achieved a 133% return on investment during the period.

XProtect VMS ROI study highlights operational efficiency gains

One of the strongest findings from the study was the reduction in investigation and evidence-handling time. Organisations reported investigations becoming 30% to 60% faster because workflows were simplified on a single open platform. The study also pointed towards lower operational expenses through hardware reuse and reduced licensing and integration costs, making the platform relevant not just for security teams but also for enterprise operations and IT management.

The results also reflected how organisations are increasingly linking video infrastructure with broader operational intelligence goals. Martin Stockfleth Larsen, Chief Marketing Officer, Milestone Systems, said the platform acts as an AI-driven video intelligence enabler that goes beyond traditional surveillance. He noted that reducing investigation time while improving operational visibility allows organisations to better understand ongoing events and respond faster to incidents.

The practical examples shared in the study further reinforced this operational impact. A logistics security manager said shipment tracking investigations that previously took up to 30 minutes were reduced by nearly 70% after moving to the new system. In another example, a retail security leader explained that an insurance-related case worth nearly USD 1 million was resolved in around half an hour without prolonged legal disputes or repeated discussions.

AI-driven video intelligence enabler changes enterprise priorities

Another important takeaway from the study is how enterprise video management is slowly evolving into a broader operational analytics layer. The platform’s open architecture and integration flexibility appear to be playing a key role in reducing deployment complexity and administrative workload across organisations. That shift is especially important as enterprises continue balancing security needs with rising infrastructure costs and operational expectations.

The study also indirectly points towards a larger trend around VMS cost-benefit analysis for enterprise deployments. Instead of evaluating surveillance systems only through hardware or camera expansion, organisations are now measuring impact through faster response times, operational efficiency and lower downtime risks. In environments where security, logistics and operational continuity overlap, these outcomes are becoming increasingly valuable.

The XProtect VMS ROI study ultimately reflects how modern video management platforms are being positioned as long-term intelligence systems rather than standalone surveillance tools. As organisations continue searching for smarter operational visibility and faster decision-making, AI-driven video intelligence and simplified investigations are likely to remain central to future enterprise security investments.
