AMD and Anthropic partnership targets gigawatt-scale AI
The AMD and Anthropic partnership is moving beyond hardware deployment into a deeper collaboration around AI infrastructure and software. The companies plan to deploy up to 2 gigawatts of AMD Instinct MI450 Series GPUs in AMD Helios rack-scale solutions, with the first gigawatt expected to begin deployment in the first half of 2027.
The deal comes as Anthropic scales its compute infrastructure to support demand for Claude. For AMD, the planned deployment represents a major expansion of its role in the AI infrastructure buildout, combining its computing, networking and software stack with Anthropic's frontier AI work.
AMD Instinct MI450 Series takes centre stage
Anthropic will deploy AMD Helios rack-scale solutions featuring AMD Instinct MI455X GPUs, part of the AMD Instinct MI450 Series, alongside AMD EPYC "Venice" CPUs, AMD Pensando networking and ROCm software.
The systems are designed for next-generation AI training and inference workloads. The deployment also builds on Anthropic's existing use of AMD Instinct MI355X GPUs, pointing to a broader relationship rather than a one-off infrastructure purchase.
The scale is significant within the announcement. The planned 2 Gigawatts AI compute deployment gives Anthropic additional capacity while allowing AMD to expand its position across the AI infrastructure stack.
AMD Helios rack-scale solutions expand the partnership
The AMD Helios rack-scale solutions are central to the next stage of the collaboration. Anthropic says access to compute is essential to keeping Claude at the frontier and meeting customer demand.
The partnership also reflects a strategy of using different hardware for different workloads. Anthropic says a diversified hardware environment allows it to map the right workloads to the right hardware.
For AMD, this creates an opportunity to work more closely with Anthropic across infrastructure, rather than focusing only on GPU supply.
AMD EPYC Venice CPUs meet deeper software work
The partnership extends into engineering, with the companies launching a multi-year collaboration to use Claude to accelerate AMD software development.
The teams will work on AI workload optimisation for AMD Instinct GPUs and accelerate ROCm software development. AMD also plans to broadly adopt Claude across its engineering and product development teams.
This creates a two-way relationship. Anthropic gets access to large-scale compute capacity, while AMD gains a direct role for Claude in parts of its software and product development work.
