AWS and NVIDIA partnership pushes AI beyond GPUs

AI workloads are moving from pilots into production, and the AWS and NVIDIA partnership is expanding to match that shift. The companies plan to deploy 2 million additional NVIDIA GPUs across AWS’s global infrastructure in 2027-2028 while extending their work into CPUs, networking, open models, data processing and robotics.

The move suggests that scaling AI is no longer just about adding more GPUs. The infrastructure underneath these workloads is becoming broader, with customers looking for more model choice, faster data pipelines and support for new areas such as agentic AI and physical AI.

Agentic AI infrastructure gets a wider foundation

The expanded collaboration will bring NVIDIA Vera CPU-based infrastructure to AWS and extend NVIDIA NVLink Fusion with custom high-bandwidth memory. AWS and NVIDIA also plan to build AI factories for the US government, including 100,000 GPUs on secure AWS infrastructure for federal and national-security workloads.

For enterprise users, the focus is also on how AI systems run. NVIDIA technology will be integrated with the AWS Nitro System and Elastic Fabric Adapter to support security, reliability and network performance as workloads scale.

The companies are also continuing support for NVIDIA Nemotron open models through Amazon Bedrock and Amazon SageMaker. Data processing and vector indexing are being accelerated through NVIDIA libraries on Amazon EMR and Amazon OpenSearch.

Physical AI hardware enters the picture

The partnership also stretches beyond traditional enterprise AI. Amazon Robotics is working with NVIDIA on next-generation robots using NVIDIA’s physical AI platform, covering simulation, synthetic data, robot training, route optimisation and validation.

That broader approach matters because the AWS and NVIDIA partnership is no longer centred on a single layer of infrastructure. It now spans GPUs, CPUs, networking, models, data and robotics.

What the expansion signals

The scale of the planned deployment is the clearest signal. AWS had previously announced plans to add more than 1 million NVIDIA GPUs starting in 2026. The new commitment adds another 2 million for 2027-2028, after demand exceeded earlier expectations.
