Fortinet Launches FortiOS 8.0 Secure Networking Platform

Fortinet has announced FortiOS 8.0, the latest version of the operating system that powers the Fortinet Security Fabric. The release introduces new capabilities in AI-driven security, secure access service edge (SASE), and quantum-safe protection to address evolving enterprise infrastructure requirements.

The platform was unveiled during Fortinet Accelerate 2026 as part of the company’s Secure Networking strategy. The update aims to help organizations manage security across hybrid infrastructures while simplifying operational complexity.

FortiOS serves as the unified operating system underlying Fortinet’s security architecture, connecting networking and security functions across cloud, data center, and network edge environments.

Unified Operating System for Modern Infrastructure

Organizations are increasingly adopting cloud-first strategies, hybrid work models, and generative AI tools. These shifts have expanded the attack surface while increasing operational complexity for security teams.

FortiOS 8.0 addresses these challenges by providing a single operating system that integrates security visibility, network controls, and threat protection. The platform is designed to maintain consistent protection across distributed digital infrastructure while enabling centralized management.

According to the company, the new release expands capabilities across three primary areas: AI-driven security, next-generation SASE architecture, and quantum-safe cryptographic protection.

Ken Xie, Founder, Chairman, and Chief Executive Officer of Fortinet, said the operating system reflects decades of development at the intersection of networking and security.

He stated that as organizations adopt AI technologies, expand cloud deployments, and rely on encrypted environments, unified security platforms become necessary to reduce complexity and maintain visibility across infrastructure.

AI-Driven Security and Governance

FortiOS 8.0 introduces a set of features focused on securing enterprise AI adoption and improving network visibility.

Key additions include FortiView for AI attack surface and shadow AI, which provides real-time visibility into AI application usage across the organization. The capability allows security teams to distinguish between approved and unauthorized AI tools, enabling better governance and compliance monitoring.

The operating system also introduces AI-aware application controls that allow approved generative AI tools while restricting potentially risky activities that may expose sensitive enterprise data.

Additional enhancements include:

  • Model Context Protocol (MCP) and agent-to-agent visibility, designed to identify hidden AI interactions between applications and services

  • Enhanced data loss prevention with optical character recognition, enabling detection of sensitive information embedded in images or scanned documents

  • AI-driven operational agents, designed to assist administrators with troubleshooting and configuration tasks through conversational workflows

These features aim to reduce operational overhead while improving response times for network and security management.

Expansion of Next-Generation SASE Capabilities

FortiOS 8.0 also expands Fortinet’s secure access service edge architecture to support performance-sensitive and regulated environments.

One of the major additions is SASE Outpost, which enables organizations to deploy SASE points of presence in customer-controlled locations such as private data centers, on-premises environments, or colocation facilities while retaining centralized cloud management.

The platform also introduces sovereign SASE deployment models, allowing organizations to manage regional data residency requirements through flexible control-plane and log retention options.

Other networking enhancements include:

  • Unified SD-WAN bundles that integrate overlay and underlay connectivity with centralized management and reporting

  • Multipath IPsec tunnels designed to improve application performance and network resilience across distributed enterprise sites

These features aim to improve connectivity optimization while maintaining consistent security enforcement across hybrid networks.

Preparing Infrastructure for Quantum-Safe Security

Fortinet has also expanded support for post-quantum cryptography within FortiOS 8.0 to address long-term cybersecurity risks associated with quantum computing.

New capabilities include quantum-resilient cryptographic controls designed to secure management access paths and VPN connectivity using post-quantum certificates such as ML-DSA.

The platform also enhances SSL deep inspection using hybrid key exchange mechanisms combined with post-quantum cryptographic protection. These capabilities allow security teams to detect threats hidden in encrypted traffic while maintaining strong encryption standards.

Quantum-safe security features are also integrated into SASE environments, extending protection across access management and encrypted communications.

Supporting Enterprise Digital Transformation

Fortinet positions FortiOS 8.0 as a platform designed to support organizations navigating digital transformation initiatives. The operating system integrates networking and security capabilities into a single architecture intended to simplify infrastructure management.

By embedding AI governance, advanced connectivity, and quantum-safe protection within a unified platform, the company aims to provide organizations with a scalable foundation for securing hybrid environments and supporting emerging technologies.

Fortinet stated that the platform is intended to help enterprises manage security requirements associated with AI adoption, cloud expansion, and increasing network encryption while maintaining operational efficiency.
