UST and Italdesign partnership reshapes mobility engineering

The UST and Italdesign partnership is bringing together two very different strengths at a time when the automotive industry is becoming increasingly software-driven. UST has completed the acquisition of a majority stake in Italdesign from the Audi Group, combining Italdesign’s long-standing design and engineering expertise with UST’s capabilities in AI, digital engineering and software-defined vehicles.
The move points to a broader shift in how next-generation vehicles are being developed. Instead of treating design, engineering, software and AI as separate stages, the partnership aims to connect them from concept through production.
Design and AI move closer together
Italdesign brings nearly six decades of automotive design and engineering experience, including work on some of the world’s most recognizable vehicles. UST adds its focus on AI, digital engineering, software-defined vehicles and digital ecosystem design.
That combination could make the partnership particularly relevant as manufacturers deal with increasingly complex vehicle programmes. The stated goal is to help customers move faster from early concepts to production while retaining the creative and engineering focus that has traditionally shaped automotive development.
The strategy also reflects a belief shared by both companies that the future of mobility AI will not be driven by software alone. Human creativity remains central, while AI and digital engineering become increasingly integrated into the product development process.
Italdesign keeps its identity
Despite the ownership change, Italdesign will continue to operate under its existing name, values and distinctive competencies. Its approach will remain holistic and multidisciplinary, with a growing focus on sustainability.
For UST, the acquisition adds established automotive credibility and design expertise to its technology capabilities. For Italdesign, the partnership provides access to UST’s global scale, AI capabilities, digital engineering expertise and client relationships.
