CONFED-ITA issues 7-Day ultimatum to Lenovo; Threatens State-Wide Boycott over store allotment dispute

In a significant escalation of tensions between regional IT channels and global tech giants, the Confederation of Information Technology Associations (CONFED-ITA), representing Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, has issued a stern ultimatum to Lenovo India. The association has threatened a total suspension of product billing across the region if the brand fails to prioritise local association members for exclusive store allotments.

The spark: The Marthandam store dispute

The conflict stems from a specific grievance regarding a Lenovo Exclusive Store in Marthandam, Kanniyakumari District. Following a General Body meeting by the state association held on March 14, 2026, in Virudhunagar, CONFED-ITA leadership expressed deep dissatisfaction with the brand's response to their concerns.

According to the association, Lenovo’s recent communications suggest a strategy that relies on local members to drive sales volume while simultaneously bypassing them when awarding Exclusive Store franchises. The association alleges that the brand is prioritising large players with "multi-location" business footprints over dedicated local partners.

"This is unfair and not acceptable," stated R. Saravanan, Secretary of CONFED-ITA, in a formal representation to the Lenovo team and its distributors.

The Ultimatum: A Seven-Day Window

The association, backed by the consensus of its District Executive members, has laid down a firm deadline. If a "smooth solution" is not reached within seven days, CONFED-ITA members across Tamil Nadu and Puducherry will immediately halt all billing of Lenovo products.

The proposed boycott is said to have an impact on two major areas among the members:

  • Product Segments: Consumer, Commercial, and Peripherals.
  • Supply Chain: Billing will stop from all National Distributors (NDs), Regional Distributors (RDs), and Sub-Distributors (SDs).

The Demand for Local Priority

At the heart of the dispute is the demand for Lenovo to "Prioritise Association Members for Lenovo Exclusive Stores". The association argues that local partners provide the foundational support necessary for a brand’s regional growth and should, therefore, be given preference in retail expansion opportunities rather than being sidelined for larger, multi-city entities.

This development signals a growing trend of regional IT associations asserting their collective bargaining power against Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) to protect the interests of local MSME entrepreneurs.
